Magunochi Ippo, içine kapanık, utangaç, sıradan bir lise öğrencisidir. Okuldan arta kalan zamanını annesine, balık işinde yardım ederek geçirmektedir. Genelde de okulda tartaklanmaktadır. Tartaklanmaktan nefret etmektedir ama karşı koyamamaktan daha çok nefret etmektedir. Bir gün okulun serserileri, İppo'ya saldıracakken Takamura adlı bir boksör tarafından kurtarılır. Takamura'ya hayran kalan Ippo, boks öğrenmeye karar verir. Ancak boks, Ippo'nun sandığı kadar kolay değildir. Takamura, Ippo'yu teste tabi tutar.
